Scott/Mike:

In various places, instructions about upgrading ASL note using:

"yum upgrade" versus "yum update"

Is there still a functional difference between the two?

I thought that there used to be a difference (in regards to obsoletes) but that is typically no longer the case by default as obsoletes=1 is a typical default these days.

Assuming obsoletes=1 in the yum config, is there still a difference between the two?

Thanks.

If everyone actually had that set consistently, yes. We can't ever make the assumption that its set, or isnt set conditionally per repo. Been burned by that one too many times.

I've never used obsoletes=1 in any .repo

QUESTION: Should I add obsoletes=1 to all my .repo's ???

Its the perl motto.... theres more than one way to do it :P

Personally since I'm on so many different systems, I go with the the methods that are going to be the most consistent across different environments (upgrade vs. update for example.)

Oops, just realized, the obsoletes=1 is in my /etc/yum.conf file.
