Okey, this one is probably a stupid question, but anyways; Does clamd scan disk read and writes? Like window antivirus does? Or only email?

I'm having troubles with disk throughput of more than 2 Mbyte/sec causing loads > 20, and are trying to figure out whats the culprit.

Centos 4, 2x160GB SATA drives in software RAID.

I don't know if it's possible, but at least it doesn't by default. Try top to see what's causing the load.

there's no cpu-intensive processes, just 90-95% iddle cpu and loads of io-wait.

Could the raid array have gone bad? That might be what's causing the iowaits and therefore the high load?

I'm assuming it only just started - or has it been like this all the time?

Faris.

check dmesg to see if you're getting any errors from the disks too
