this is no longer maintained for el6, as the native vmware tools are compatible with that platform

That's because of the 0.0.0.301124-1.8 version of kmod-open-vm-tools in the repository, which really should have been 0.0.0.301124-1.1.8 looking at the rest of the versions.

I've 'fixed' this by adding the following to the [asl-3.0] section in /etc/yum.repos.d/asl.repo:
