when i logged into the ASL web-gui, it shows that there are Updates Available for both ClamAV and WAF.
but on the log, it shows freshclam: database updated.
so my question is, do I need to do anything in particular to have them auto-update?

The ASL rules are updated by running asl -u. By default this is run automatically via cron once a day. You can change the value of AUTOMATIC_UPDATES in /etc/asl/config to for instance "hourly" if you like. You'll probably also be able to configure this via the ASL web interface.

Just to expand on this, there are two sets of rules for clamav

There's the normal set, updated by freshclam and which probably gives you the "database updated" message, and a separate set of ASL rules which are updated by asl -u.

The GUI only reports on the asl set of rules.
